Mejor manejo empresarial postpandemia

The coronavirus pandemic has paralyzed the world because of the lockdowns that had to be put in place. Most of people have had to stay indoors in their houses for several month, and this has had a significative psychological impact in millions of human beings. This impact, for its mental and psychological character, has a direct incidence on our way of see the world and on the habits we use for relating to reality.

For this reason, frozen activities we are facing is not only a parenthesis that temporarily suspends our day to day activities and then we are going to regain them in the same way they were developed before the lockdown. As our habits have been changing for days and days, there are going to be new trends, new ways of developing our daily tasks, new methodologies that have emerged as a need in this situation, but that are going to stay with us for very long. This is so for many aspects of our life, and businesses are no exception. In fact, it might be in the corporate world where the slow transformations of the current pandemic are going to be felt with the highest strength.

Facing this, many managers and directors are asking themselves what is going to be the future of their companies in the post-pandemic world. This is, otherwise, an intelligent question, that is related to future perspectives and to the ability to predict given by these perspectives, and this has always been a trait in a successful leader. Predicting some future tendencies allows an anticipation for having the proper preparation for them, and this assures the survival of the company and its possible positioning as a leading company.

For this reason, as it has always been said, a crisis, a transformation process, can be a huge catastrophe or a huge opportunity, and this depends on the attitude we assume the situation with. In this time of crisis for coronavirus the most appropriate thing to do is to ask questions and try to find the best options of business models from the possible transformations we are going to live in the world after the emergency state we currently are in is lifted.

What are some of the questions managers can ask themselves for gaining an orientation in the new corporate conditions we are seeing in this historical moment?

1. Is it intelligent to take seriously the digital transformation?

Since the 90’s the concept of digital transformation for businesses has been developed (Schallmo y Williams, 2018). The emergence of computation and its advantages meant from the beginning the start of a completely digitalized and virtual world for the development of the commercial activity. This was becoming a reality in a slow way year by year. However, the current pandemic has made this reality to amazingly explode: only businesses and companies that have quickly assumed a digital communication with its customers have survived the crisis.

Interestingly, however, these companies are discovering that even in a normal state, digitality ends up being more attractive than the traditional ways of doing businesses. From this, many directors are now trying to learn the most they can about what a digital transformation is and how to assume it in a successful and intelligent way.

They ask, specifically, if the digital transformation is going to be an important step for its organization in the world we receive after the crisis. And reality is showing that this is the right direction, because the need to establish telework and a completely digital relationship with clients has forced great parts of businesses to begin to get digitalized and speed up, and in a few months competitiveness will be determined by the amount of processes that a company might automate and the way in which it has adapted the operation to the speediness of technology.

2. Will telework add value to my business?

Working from home is the reality for millions of employees today all over the world. The forced lockdown in hundreds of countries made many companies to establish internet connection spots in their workers’ homes for them to develop the activities from there. This seemed weird at the beginning, a strange action in the regular habits of office life. However, day by day, workers and managers have been discovering the huge advantages of this modality.

They use less time in commuting, in gas and parking places for private vehicles, or money for tickets in public transportation, easiness in food and a better quality in it because it is homemade, practicality for organizing time to be able to share with family, etc.

For all of this, predictions announce that with a high probability many companies will keep telework practices and this will increase their productivity, due to saved time and the increase in employees’ satisfaction (Eisenberg, 2020). Thinking on a stable strategy for home work is an important reflection for many managers and it is even more important if they want to start a process of digital transformation that is going to receive a benefit from this practice

3. Will a software solution help with these new business models?

At facing these questions, many managers are also searching the best software options for automating their processes and boosting digital transformations. Truth is that competitiveness in post-pandemic environment is going to be set by the use of information technology, and those who are not implementing intelligent solutions for automating their processes are going to be in a great disadvantage compared to market leaders, who are going to be performing from the speediness of corporate processes’ automation. In this sense, BPMS solutions are becoming a key in the success of many big, medium and small corporations.
